Internists are gastroenterologists (doctors trained in internal medicine). After medical school, they complete an additional six years of specialized training. These medical professionals focus on disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, including those that affect the rectum, gallbladder, pancreas, liver, intestines, and gallbladder. The gastroenterologist will examine you in an effort to determine what is causing your problems. On the exam table, you will relax and lay down. Your doctor will apply pressure to the skin on your abdomen. They will feel for any masses or tenderness and listen for unusual bowel sounds. During the examination, they could instruct you to cough or take deep breaths.
