POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy) is an endoscopic procedure used to address swallowing issues, most frequently achalasia. The procedure known as Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy, or POEM, was very recently developed. This in-patient procedure can be completed in one to three hours. Achalasia and other swallowing issues are often brought on by the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter and the esophagus, which make it challenging to swallow and for food to pass into the stomach.
