A peroral endoscopic myotomy is used to treat abnormal swallowing caused by musculoskeletal issues, such as spasms in the esophagus. In POEM, the esophageal muscles are severed using an endoscope, a tiny, flexible tube with a camera that is placed into the mouth (peroral) (a myotomy). You can keep the muscles from tightening up and making it difficult for you to swallow by cutting them. Since POEM does not involve making an incision in the skin, it is not considered surgery. It is a less intrusive procedure than a Heller myotomy, which enters the mouth to reach the esophagus. Endoscopic techniques usually have a shorter recovery period and cause less discomfort than open surgical therapies.POEM might be beneficial for those with esophageal muscle abnormalities such achalasia.
