Endoscopic ultrasound is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose digestive (GI) and lung diseases. A special endoscope produces detailed images of the lining and walls of your digestive tract and chest, as well as nearby organs such as the pancreas liver, and lymph nodes, using high-frequency sound waves. When combined with a fine-needle aspiration procedure, EUS allows your doctor to sample (biopsy) fluid and tissue from your abdomen or chest for analysis. EUS combined with fine-needle aspiration may be a less invasive alternative to exploratory surgery. Certain treatments, such as draining pseudocysts, also make use of EUS techniques.
